MIRAMAR, Fla. – Feb. 27, 2026 – NBC6 South Florida / WTVJ, part of NBCUniversal Local, today launched On Assignment: 40 Years of Florida News, a five-part multiplatform podcast honoring veteran investigative reporter Tony Pipitone as he concludes his 40-year TV journalism career. The first episode, published today — Pipitone’s final day with NBC6 — is available on NBC6.com, the NBC6 App, and YouTube. Subsequent episodes will debut daily at 11 a.m. ET beginning Monday, March 2, through Thursday, March 5.
Hosted by NBC6 anchor Roxanne Vargas, the podcast features an in-depth conversation reflecting on Pipitone’s four decades of reporting in Florida. The series revisits significant stories from his career and offers behind-the-scenes insight into the investigative work that informed and impacted communities statewide.
Among the major events highlighted in the podcast are the Casey Anthony case, the Parkland school shooting, the Surfside condominium collapse, and the UPS shootout – stories that tested newsrooms and communities alike and defined pivotal moments in Florida history.
“For 40 years, I’ve had the privilege of telling the stories of people whose lives were forever changed by injustice, tragedy and sometimes triumph,” said Pipitone. “This podcast gave me the opportunity to reflect on the responsibility that comes with investigative journalism and the incredible trust viewers place in us every day.”
Pipitone joined NBC6 Investigates in 2014 and is among Florida’s most honored investigative reporters. He has received 16 Suncoast Emmy Awards, including the Silver Circle Award for 25 years of excellence in television, as well as seven Edward R. Murrow Awards and numerous statewide and regional honors. His investigations have exposed corruption, uncovered systemic failures, and in some cases, helped both convict individuals and get people released from custody.
His recent Emmy and Murrow Award-winning investigation 90 Minutes of Terror examined weaknesses in the manslaughter case prosecutors brought against police officers following a deadly chase that claimed the lives of two innocent men.
“Tony’s work represents the very best of what local investigative journalism should be: fearless, thorough and deeply committed to accountability,” said Dawn Clapperton, Vice President of News for NBC6. “His reporting has not only informed our viewers, but it has also driven meaningful impact in our community. We are proud to honor his extraordinary career with this podcast.”
