MIAMI – May 29, 2025 – Noticias Telemundo presents “State of Silence,” a documentary directed by Santiago Maza and executive produced by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal on Saturday, May 31st at 8:55 pm ET, marking the film’s premiere on a U.S. broadcast television network.
The highly acclaimed documentary explores press freedom in Mexico. It traces the harrowing stories of four Mexican journalists and the existential threats they face reporting on corruption and criminal wrongdoing in Mexico.
Telemundo’s airing of “State of Silence” will feature special segments including a sit-down interview with Diego Luna by Noticias Telemundo anchor Julio Vaqueiro, and a roundtable discussion led by Vaqueiro with Luna, Jesús Medina, one of the journalists featured in the film and Griselda Triana, a human rights advocate and the widow of murdered Mexican journalist Javier Valdez.
The film focuses on journalists Juan de Dios García, María de Jesús Peters, Marcos Vizcarra and Medina, who have become targets of repression in retaliation for their reporting. The documentary follows the reporters into perilous territories in Mexico, from the forests where illegal loggers operate to the militarized border in Tijuana and the badlands believed to belong to a head of the Sinaloa drug cartel.
According to the human rights organization Article 19, 172 journalists have been killed since 2000 in Mexico, making it one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Mexico also consistently ranks among the 10 countries with the highest number of journalist murders that remain unsolved, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
“State of Silence” premiered last year at the Tribeca International Film Festival (USA), the Sheffield Film Festival (UK), and the Guadalajara International Film Festival (Mexico), among others. It won Best Feature Film at the Santiago International Film Festival (Chile) and Best Documentary at the Red Sea Film Festival (Saudi Arabia).
The documentary was developed by La Corriente del Golfo, a production company focused on films, TV and podcasts founded by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal.
