MIAMI – October 2, 2022 – Latino voters prefer Democrats to control Congress after the midterm elections by a margin of 54% to 33% but the Democractic lead has declined from previous election cycles, according to a new NBC News/Telemundo poll released on Sunday.
The 21-point Democractic advantage is lower compared to previous NBC News/Telemundo oversamples of Latino voters. In October 2020, the lead was 26 points, in November 2018 it was 34 points and in October 2016 it was 38 points.
The national poll of registered voters found Latinos divided on President Joe Biden’s job performance with 51% of Latinos saying they approved compared with 45% who disapprove. The polls also shows Latinos believe inflation, threats to democracy and jobs and the economy are the most important problems facing the United States, followed by immigration, climate change, guns and abortion.

Some of the key findings include:
- A majority of Latino voters – 54% – disapprove of Biden’s handling of the economy. When asked if Biden’s economic policies have helped or hurt economic conditions, 33% say they have helped, 39% say they have hurt and 36% say they haven’t made much difference
- On managing the economy, Latinos prefer Republicans 38% to 34%, and on border security 36% to 33%
- 59% of Latino voters say they are “very interested” in the midterm elections
- A majority of Latinos – 60% – say abortion should be legal versus 39% who say it should be illegal
- Latino voters believe Democrats do a better job of dealing with the issue of abortion by a 50% to 23% margin
- On having the right approach to gun laws, 42% of Latinos say Democrats and 29% say Republicans
- On the issue of promoting tolerance and respect, 49% of Latinos say Democrats do a better job versus 22% who say Republicans
- When asked to describe their family income in today’s economy, 54% said it was falling behind the cost of living, 34% said it was staying even
- 65% of Latinos say migrants and refugees who arrive at the southern border should be allowed to request asylum and stay in the United States until their case is heard, while 31% say they should be immediately detained and sent back to their countries of origin
The poll was conducted by Hart Research Associates between September 17 and September 26th and has a margin of error of +/- 3.10 percentage points. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll interviewed 1,000 registered Latino voters.
