Veteran Newsroom Leader Recently Served as Assistant News Director for NBC 5 Chicago & Telemundo Chicago for the Past Two Years
Chicago, IL (December 2, 2025) – Telemundo Chicago (WSNS‑TV), part of NBCUniversal Local’s Telemundo Station Group, today announced nine‑time Emmy Award‑winning newsroom leader José Carlos Pérez has been promoted to News Director, effective immediately. The announcement was made by Sally Ramirez, Senior Vice President of News, NBCUniversal Local Chicago. Prior to his promotion, Pérez served as Assistant News Director for NBC 5 Chicago (WMAQ‑TV) and Telemundo Chicago since January 2024.
In his new role, Pérez will oversee Telemundo Chicago’s editorial strategy and newsroom operations, leading a team of dedicated journalists committed to serving the City of Chicago and its surrounding Spanish‑speaking communities with impactful, community‑driven news coverage.
Pérez enters his new position with nearly two decades of newsroom leadership across Telemundo Station Group. Over the past two years, he helped guide the combined operations of NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago, advancing editorial excellence and strengthening the duopoly’s commitment to trusted journalism.
“José Carlos is a proven newsroom leader who brings both hands‑on experience and strategic vision to this role,” said Ramirez. “His deep understanding of and compassion for Chicago’s diverse population make him the ideal person to guide our talented Telemundo Chicago newsroom team.”
Prior to joining NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago, Pérez spent more than 11 years in news production and newsroom leadership roles with Telemundo 51 Miami (WSCV‑TV), most recently as Senior Executive Producer and Executive Producer after six years as a news producer.
Pérez previously spent more than five years in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas in various positions within NBCU Local, including the Telemundo Production Center (TPC), the Telemundo Content Center and also Telemundo 39 Dallas (KXTX‑TV). With TPC, he began as an intern and held several editing and production roles before producing newscasts for Telemundo 39 Dallas and Telemundo 60 San Antonio (KVDA‑TV).
In addition to receiving nine local Emmy Awards, Pérez was awarded a prestigious fellowship from The Carole Kneeland Project for Responsible Journalism.
Originally from Yaguajay, Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Pérez was raised in Miami, Florida. He earned a full scholarship to Florida State University and later completed his bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Management at the University of Texas-Arlington.
