SAN FRANCISCO, CA – September 28, 2023 – Telemundo 48 is proud to announce that its distinguished reporter, Pilar Niño, will be the recipient of the prestigious Dolores Huerta Lifetime Achievement Award at the 17th Annual Latino Heritage Month Celebration hosted by San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed. The ceremony is set to take place today, Thursday, September 28, at the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda, with attendees encouraged to arrive at 5:00 p.m.
Pilar Niño’s selection as the Dolores Huerta Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is a testament to her unwavering commitment to the Bay Area community. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to enhancing the lives of Latinos and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities, making her a highly deserving recipient of this esteemed honor.
Stacy Owen, President and General Manager of Telemundo 48 and NBC Bay Area, stated, “We are immensely proud to see Pilar Niño, one of our own, receive the prestigious Dolores Huerta Lifetime Achievement Award. Pilar’s commitment to journalism excellence and her tireless dedication to the betterment of our community have left an indelible mark. Her work is a testament to the power of storytelling to inspire change, and her achievements embody our commitment to moving the community forward. We congratulate Pilar on this well-deserved honor and look forward to her continued impact in the Bay Area.”
“Pilar Niño’s dedication to journalism and the Latino community has made her a trailblazer. For a decade, she was Telemundo 48’s sole voice in San Francisco and the Bay Area, deeply connecting with our community and local authorities. Her tireless efforts to provide accurate and timely information during the pandemic, collaborating with the Department of Public Health and the Latino Task Force, helped to increase vaccination rates among Latinos and save lives. Pilar’s impartial Proposition 8 coverage and uplifting stories of immigrants and human rights champions earned her praise. She’s a beacon of journalistic excellence and a deserving Dolores Huerta Lifetime Achievement Award recipient,” said Rossyris Silva, Vice President of News for Telemundo 48.
Throughout her career, Niño has earned 10 Emmy Awards for journalistic excellence in categories: breaking news, continuous coverage, and videography. Her dedication to advancing the causes of the Latino community has garnered her numerous additional accolades. As a devoted mother of one, she passionately advocates for social justice, civil rights, immigrant rights, education, assimilation into the United States, politics, and economics.
The 2023 Latino Heritage Month Celebration at San Francisco’s City Hall coincides with the nationally recognized National Latino Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, which commemorates the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.
Under the resonant theme “Somos San Francisco” (“We Are San Francisco”), thoughtfully chosen by the Host Committee, this year’s celebration endeavors to uplift Central American communities and promote inclusivity, championing historically marginalized groups within the Latino community.
