Star-Studded 4.5-Hour Event Was No. 1 Ranked Non-Sports Program in South Florida Saturday Night Among Key Demos
MIRAMAR, FL – September 21, 2023 – This past Saturday, Sept. 16, Telemundo 51/WSCV hosted its 25th annual telethon to benefit la Liga Contra el Cáncer (The League Against Cancer), which was broadcast from the Telemundo 51 studios and the Miami-Dade Expo Center from 7 to 11:30 p.m. ET. By the end of the 4.5-hour live telecast, donations and pledges totaled $4,192,175, a figure that continues to grow as the organization receives donations.
The telethon was hosted by Telemundo 51’s Daisy Ballmajó, host of Conectados con Daisy, Telemundo 51 news anchors and reporters Fausto Malavé, Alejandra Molina, Marilys Llanos, Mariana Rodriguez and Alejandro Isturiz and was dedicated to the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz.
“I am always proud of the work my team does for the Liga Contra el Cáncer telethon, but this year I felt even prouder because it was the 25th consecutive year our station has produced the telethon and of our commitment to la Liga”, said Jorge Carballo, President and General Manager of Telemundo 51 and NBC6. “The fact that this telethon was dedicated to the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, who was a huge supporter of la Liga and who sadly died of cancer herself, made it all the more special.”
Additionally, the live broadcast of the Liga Contra el Cáncer telethon ranked No. 1 in the market for non-sports programming, regardless of language, among A18-49 and A25-54.
The telethon had the support of dozens of volunteers and celebrities, along with Telemundo 51/WSCV news anchors Gloria Ordaz and Lisset Mari. There were also musical performances by Amaury Gutiérrez, Aymée Nuviola, Celia Cruz All Stars, Diago, DJ Yus, Gente de Zona, Jon Secada, Lena, Leslie Cartaya, Malena Burke, Oscar D’León, Rob Suárez, and Willy Chirino. Music superstars Gloria and Emilio Estefan also participated, sharing their memories of Celia Cruz and her philanthropic work with the Liga Contra el Cáncer.
