ESTEEMED JOURNALISTS JOSÉ DíAZ-BALART AND TOM LLAMAS DEBUT NEW PROGRAMS THIS MONTH

NBC LATINO AND NBCNEWS.COM LAUNCH “THE NEW LATINO LANDSCAPE” PROJECT 

EXTENSIVE REPORTING TO AIR ON NBC NEWS, MSNBC, CNBC, NBC NEWS NOW AND PEACOCK IN SEPTEMBER AND BEYOND

NEW YORK (September 15, 2021) – NBCUniversal News Group is commemorating Hispanic Heritage with comprehensive reporting on issues important to the Hispanic community through the month of September and beyond. NBCUniversal News Group will feature division-wide coverage of Hispanic history, culture and influence across NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC, NBC News Digital and Peacock.  

Anchors, reporters and correspondents will appear across the News Group to deliver in-depth story-telling and perspective from the Hispanic community. 

Additionally, José Díaz-Balart will join MSNBC as anchor of MSNBC’s José Díaz-Balart Reports. His program premieres on September 27 and will air weekdays at 10 a.m. ET. With the announcement, Díaz-Balart becomes the only anchor to host national news programs on both cable and broadcast television in English and Spanish.

NBC News Anchor and Senior National Correspondent Tom Llamas’ new primetime streaming program on NBC News NOW,Top Story with Tom Llamas, will launch beginning Monday, September 20, with daily segments focusing on the lives of Latinos across the country and Latin America. NBC News NOW is available to stream on Peacock.

NBC LATINO AND NBCNEWS.COM PRESENT THE NEW LATINO LANDSCAPE, A SPECIAL INTERACTIVE PLATFORM DEDICATED TO HISPANIC DIVERSITY AND LATINO GROWTH; NBC NEWS NOW TO STREAM NEW SPECIAL, GENERATION LATINX

  • Today, NBCNews.com and NBC Latino launch a special cross-platform project,The New Latino Landscape,with interactive digital elements showing where Latinos are living now across the US and how communities have changed over time. It’s the first NBC News project of its kind for Hispanic Heritage Month.
  • NBC News Digital and NBC News NOW will publish Dis(Owning) Hispanic, a multimedia feature on the topic of Latino identity.
  • NBC News NOW will air Generation LatinX, a streaming special anchored by NBC News’ Morgan Radford, exploring Millennial and GenZ Latino generations across the country, on Thursday, September 23. 
  • Throughout the month, NBC Latino, in collaboration with Nightly News, NBC News Now,TODAY, Telemundo,Stay Tuned and MSNBC will highlight video stories and segments on the quest for Latino identity and the preservation of Latino history, culture and civil rights. These stories and segments will be available to stream on Peacock under “Spotlighting Hispanic Heritage.”

NBC NIGHTLY NEWS TO FEATURE IN-DEPTH REPORTING ON ISSUES IMPACTING THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY ACROSS THE COUNTRY, ON AIR AND STREAMING ON PEACOCK

  • In partnership with NBC Latino, NBC News correspondent Gabe Guttierez will report on the increase in Hispanic populations across cities in the United States. 
  • In partnership with Telemundo, NBC News correspondent Morgan Radford and Telemundo anchor Julio Vaqueiro will report on the impacts of the intersection of Covid-19 and the border crisis. 
  • As climate change driven by extreme drought is causing a record surge of migration to the United States, NBC News correspondent Meagan Fitzgerald will report on the ground from Guatemala.
  • NBC News correspondentSteve Patterson will report on how minority groups, including the Latino community, suffer the most from the damage caused by wildfires.
  • As the opioid epidemic continues to rise, Radford will also report on treatment centers specifically geared toward bilingual and Spanish-speaking addictions, including whether the approach of focusing on overcoming cultural barriers to treat addiction is working. 
  • NBC News correspondentGuad Venegas will report on the battle over city officials trying to demolish Duranguito, a historic Hispanic neighborhood.

SaturdayNightly News anchorJose Diaz-Balart will report on the median Latino household income growing by three times the amount of the average family over the past ten years, as well as two families who have created multi-million dollar vineyard businesses. He will also look at the healthcare disparities for Latinos and speak with doctors trying to make things better.

TODAY TO SPOTLIGHT HISPANIC STORIES, CULTURE THROUGHOUT THE MONTH ACROSS ALL PLATFORMS

  • TODAY will feature interviews with Hispanic American celebrities including Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Emily Estefan, Lili Estefan Aberger and actress Sonia Manzano. 
  • All four hours of TODAY will highlight Latinx entrepreneurs. 
    • Savannah Sellers will speak with a street artist who went viral for his subway drawings, three Executive Chefs who are showcasing their culinary roots through plant-based menus, and five teenage girl bosses who are helping to create a community for Hispanic immigrant youth. 
  • Radford reports on how some Latinx owned businesses are now thriving despite being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • All month long, TODAY will highlight Hispanic chefs’ step-by-step recipes and Latin dishes.
  • TODAY Digital will publish several personal essays, including from TODAY’s Natalie Moralesand from NBC News’ Tom Llamas about Hispanic American pride. Plus, TODAY.com will profile several Hispanic American celebrities, including Wilmer Valderrama, Isabelle Gomez, Angel Bixmark Curiel and Adriana Barraza. 
  • TODAY.com will publish a feature looking at more than a dozen Hispanic and LatinX artists and how their culture and heritage has influenced and inspired their work.
  • TODAY Digital editors also share their favorite Hispanic foods and easy-to-follow recipes. 

MSNBC TO EXPLORE THE NATIONAL IMPACT OF THE HISPANIC AND LATINOO VOTE, EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE OF THE LATINO GDP REPORT AND MORE

  • NBC News and MSNBC National Political correspondent Steve Kornacki will examine the growing communities and political voting patterns of the Hispanic and Latino populations in Florida, Texas, Arizona and Nevada – four states that are crucial to both parties’ chances of Senate majority in 2022.
  • OnVELSHIanchorAli Velshi will revisit students who were discriminated against in the 1950s in Texas schools – made to repeat first grade over and over, largely because they were Mexican-American and their first language was Spanish. Although they sued the school and won, with Texas’ new so-called critical race theory law, teachers might not be able to teach students this part of their state’s history. Velshi will cover the story, and the implications of the law on its teaching.
  • OnThe Sunday ShowhostJonathan Capehart will do a deep dive on the planning and launch of the Museum of the American Latino poised to be housed on the National Mall.
  • On American Voices, host Alicia Menendez, will feature segments each Sunday on Latinx stories culminating with an hour-long special the final week of Hispanic Heritage Month.
  • MSNBC will partner with the L’ATTITUDE 2021 conference in San Diego at the end of September. MSNBC Anchor and NBC News Chief Business Correspondent Stephanie Ruhle will be at the opening day of the conference and report on the Latino GDP report.

CNBC TO HIGHLIGHT HISPANIC STORIES AND HOST SPECIAL DIGITAL TOWN HALLINVEST IN YOU: READY. SET. GROW.: AMERICA’S FINANCIAL EDUCATION

  • On September 15, CNBC will launch Equity and Opportunity, a new global brand that focuses on individuals and organizations leading the way on matters of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Equity and Opportunity will bring diverse perspectives and issues to CNBC’s daily news coverage on-air, online and across its events business.
  • In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, CNBC, in collaboration with Telemundo, will present an interactive and multi-platform digital town hall,Invest in You: Ready. Set. Grow.: America’s Financial Education, featuring U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona on October 13. The third Latino to serve as U.S. Secretary of Education and the proud son of Puerto Rican immigrants, Secretary Cardona will join CNBC Senior Personal Finance Correspondent Sharon Epperson for a conversation with America addressing the current state of financial education, its impact on growth opportunities for the Hispanic community, and how it can lead to economic equality and equity. 
  • CNBC’s Business Day programming will highlight and interview prominent business leaders from the Latino community that have made a significant impact in their industry. The network will also air 30-second vignettes that spotlight Hispanic business leaders and share how they achieved success and discuss the importance of empowering the next generation of Hispanic Americans in order to pursue financial well-being.
  • The News with Shepard Smith will produce a story each week focused on the Hispanic community, including the first about chef and first generation Cuban-American David Guas. Shortly after the pandemic hit, Guas, a food insecurity activist, fed families in the Washington, D.C. area who relied on school meal programs to eat and has continued that community-driven spirit by starting a new initiative called “Community Spoon” which provides meals to Afghan refugee families in need around Northern Virginia.
  • In primetime, the season finale of CNBC’sMoney Courtfeaturing former Judge Ada Pozo will air on Wednesday, September 15 at 10pm ET. Additionally, a Shark Tank marathon of episodes featuring guest sharks Alex Rodriguez and Daniel Lubetzky will air on September 23 and September 30 from 8pm to 12am ET.
  • CNBC.com will look at trends in employment and home ownership among Hispanic Americans as well as dive deep into the Mexican food category and how one man in the industry is creating a new company to sell Mexican food products that are healthier and more authentic. 
  • CNBC Make It will publish a series of profiles featuring prominent Hispanic-American leaders and small business owners, including on the Mexican-American family-run food business Siete Tortillas and on Carolyn Aronson, whose Hispanic heritage inspired her to build $500 million beauty brand It’s A 10 Haircare.
  • Acorns+CNBC’s Grow will publish reported stories and personal essays — including byJannese Torres-RodriguezDaniella Flores and Jennifer Toledo — that spotlight Hispanic Americans’ journeys to become successful entrepreneurs, homeowners and investors.
  • CNBC will partner with the L’ATTITUDE 2021 conference in San Diego at the end of September. CNBC Correspondent Contessa Brewer will be on the ground covering the latest out of the event. 

NBCU ACADEMY WILL TAKE AUDIENCES BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE NEW LATINO LANDSCAPE PROJECT

  • NBCU Academy will go behind the scenes of the creation of The New Latino Landscape Project with Sandra Lilley and put faces to the extensive census data.  
  • Throughout the month NBCUAcademy.com will also feature stories, op-eds and reports, including the bilingual report on Conecta Arizona, a WhatsApp group that grew into a community news outlet.
