Smith tracks the movement’s origins from a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) challenge to current efforts of researchers racing to get self-driving cars on the road. Additionally, Josh Mankiewicz reports from Gloucester, Massachusetts, where Chief of Police Leonard Campanello started a ground-breaking approach to treating the nation’s heroin epidemic. Campanello partnered with several treatment facilities to create “The Angel Initiative,” in which any addict who walks into the police station and asks for help is guaranteed access to detox facilities. To date, 101 police departments in 23 states have adopted elements of the initiative.
