Trump, Clinton Most Unpopular Likely Nominees in Poll’s History
47 Percent Would Consider a Third-Party Candidate
MAY 22, 2016 – In a hypothetical general election matchup, Democratic presidential candidate former Sec. Hillary Clinton holds just a three-point advantage over presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal national poll.
Forty-six percent of voters support Clinton, compared to 43 percent backing Trump – a difference within the poll’s margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.
Clinton’s lead is down seven points from the April poll, in which she held an 11-point advantage over Trump: 50 percent to 39 percent.
In a more hypothetical matchup, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) leads Trump by 15 points, 54 percent to 39 percent.
Both Trump and Clinton have high unfavorable ratings in the new poll: 58 percent and 54 percent of voters have a negative opinion of each candidate, respectively.
The poll also reveals that 47 percent of voters would consider a third-party candidate if former Sec. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the parties’ nominees.
