Tom Llamas to Anchor ‘NBC Nightly News’ and ‘Top Story’ from Ground Zero
Sept. 3, 2026 – As the nation marks 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, NBC News will present special coverage throughout the week across TODAY, NBC Nightly News, Dateline, Meet the Press, NBC News NOW and NBCNews.com.
The week of coverage will culminate Friday night with a special Dateline anchored by Lester Holt at 10 p.m. ET. Drawing from the NBC News archives, including never-before-seen footage, the documentary will revisit New Yorkers whose experiences were captured by NBC News cameras on Sept. 11, 2001, reuniting with them 25 years later as they reflect on what they saw, what they survived and how the attacks indelibly shaped their lives and the country.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 11: LIVE COVERAGE
- Earlier Friday, NBC News will present special coverage throughout the day, beginning at 7 a.m. ET with a special edition of TODAY, anchored by Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin, with Guthrie reporting from Ground Zero. At 8:30 a.m. ET, Guthrie will anchor an NBC News Special Report as the nation observes moments of silence commemorating the victims of the attacks. The special coverage will also stream on NBC News NOW.
- That evening, Tom Llamas will anchor special editions of NBC Nightly News and Top Story from Ground Zero, beginning with Nightly News at 6:30 p.m. ET
- Joining coverage will be NBC News’ Tom Costello, Stephanie Gosk, Gabe Gutierrez, Emilie Ikeda, Courtney Kube, Andrea Mitchell, Kelly O’Donnell, Anne Thompson and more. NBCNews.com and NBC News NOW will provide live coverage throughout the day
- Friday’s special edition of NBC News’ Here’s the Scoop podcast will feature interviews with guests who were children on 9/11, exploring how becoming parents has shaped their perspective on that historic day. Host Yasmin Vossoughian will also speak with a representative from the 9/11 Memorial & Museum about how to talk to children about 9/11 and its lasting impact.
- At 10:30 p.m. ET, NBC News NOW will stream a special edition of NBC Nightly News Presents: Great Americans: Service and Sacrifice, featuring stories of Americans who answered the call for their country.
THROUGHOUT THE WEEK
- NBC News’ coverage throughout the week will also include a special “Cost of Denial”investigation on NBC Nightly News, examining the ongoing health consequences of 9/11, as well as a “Great Americans” interview with Joseph Pfeifer, the first FDNY chief to respond to the World Trade Center attacks.
- NBCNews.com will share stories from Americans across the country, collected through a social callout inviting people to reflect on their memories of Sept. 11 and how the attacks changed their lives, as well as take an in-depth look at a new wave of 9/11-related cancers that have taken years to appear.
- Sunday’s Meet the Press will feature a special “Meet the Press Minute,” looking back at political leaders’ reflections on 9/11 shortly after the attack.
