ALL NEXT WEEK — NBC NEWS’ GLOBAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE DEVASTATING TOLL OF DEFORESTATION ON COMMUNITIES, ECONOMIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Week-Long In-Depth Series — ‘Rescuing the Rainforest’ — will Feature Exclusive & Ground-Breaking Reporting in Partnership with the Pulitzer Center’s Rainforest Investigations Network

Dec. 3, 2021 — All next week, NBC News will feature investigative reporting into the devastating destruction of rainforests and how it’s impacting communities, economies and the environment.

Beginning Sunday, December 5, 2021, the in-depth series, Rescuing the Rainforest, will air across NBCUniversal News Group’s platforms, including TODAY, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, MSNBC, NBCNews.com and NBC News NOW

For nearly a year, NBC News’ investigative team, in partnership with the Pulitzer Center’s Rainforest Investigations Network, have reported on a range of ground-breaking stories, including why one of the world’s most common fabrics isn’t as environmentally friendly as previously thought; how the rise of electric cars like Tesla is increasing the demand for nickel mining that is encroaching on the Philippines rainforest; how Puerto Rico is providing hope for reforestation; and the debate over a new policy that major companies are using to appear carbon neutral.

Programming through the week will feature:

  • On Wednesday, Dec. 8 during Nightly News, NBC News correspondent Stephanie Gosk will investigate how viscose rayon is damaging the world’s rainforests even though it’s been promoted as being environmentally friendly. The NBC News investigation will also track the world’s third most common fabric supply chain through China to major retailers in the U.S.
  • On Sunday, Dec. 5 during Nightly News, NBC News correspondent Jacob Ward will report on how the rise of electric cars like Tesla is endangering one of the last frontiers in the Philippines. The investigation will reveal how a mine that supplies nickel for electric vehicle batteries is on the verge of a major expansion into a pristine rainforest.
  • NBC News correspondent Jacob Soboroff will visit Puerto Rico’s El Yunque National Forest to report on how the area’s reforestation can provide hope for rainforests around the world to recover. The report will air Wednesday, Dec. 8 on TODAY
  • MSNBC correspondent Josh Lederman will investigate corporations across the world that are claiming to be carbon neutral by paying landowners not to cut down forests instead of cutting their own fossil fuel use. Is it a climate solution or a greenwashing scheme? The report will air Sunday, Dec. 5 on MSNBC and publish on NBCNews.com.
