Special Features Exclusive Network Interviews With Key Insiders, Including Man Who Served Nearly 30 Years on Death Row
‘The Investigation’ Premieres Friday, August 13 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT
Airs During NBC News and MSNBC’s Week-Long ‘Justice for All’ Series
August 9, 2021 – In Friday’s all-new Dateline NBC, NBC News’ Lester Holt will report on the murder of four-year-old Barbara Jean Horn, and how the investigation into her death revealed decades of misconduct across Philadelphia’s criminal justice system and raised questions of whether police had caught the right man. The Investigation airs Friday, August 13 at 10pm ET/9pm CT.
During the one-hour Dateline, the man once convicted and sentenced to death for Barbara Jean’s murder, Walter Ogrod, speaks out in his first network television interview about being wrongfully convicted. The special also features an exclusive national broadcast interview with Barbara Jean’s parents and an interview with journalist Tom Lowenstein, who investigated Barbara Jean’s murder for decades.
Additionally, Holt speaks with Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner about plans to restore trust in the city’s criminal justice system and correct decades of misconduct. The Investigation is produced by Dateline’s supervising producer Dan Slepian and senior producer Paul Ryan. David Corvo is the senior executive producer and Liz Cole is the executive producer.
The special is part of NBC News’ week-long Justice for All series featuring in-depth and exclusive coverage on wrongful convictions and the state of the criminal justice system in the U.S. Reports will air across TODAY, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, NBC News NOW, NBCNews.com and MSNBC.
The series will include a special edition of MSNBC’s Into America podcast, featuring host Trymaine Lee’s interview with a Brooklyn man wrongfully convicted of murder who is now mentoring kids through the power of boxing. NBC News Senior National Correspondent Kate Snow will also spotlight a Michigan conviction integrity unit and NBC News Senior Washington Correspondent Hallie Jackson will report on how Missouri politics may be standing in the way of overturning convictions. The Justice for All series began in 2019 as a NBC Nightly News segment, evolving into a network-wide initiative led by Holt.
