July 19, 2021 – NBC News will begin coverage of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad live from Tokyo this week. Flagship programs TODAY and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt will broadcast from key locations leading up to and during the Olympic Games.
TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie will kick off NBC News’ coverage, broadcasting live from Tokyo all this week. She will also co-host the Opening Ceremony Friday, July 23 alongside NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico. The event marks NBC’s first-ever live morning broadcast of an opening ceremony, and it will be followed by a special edition of TODAY with reaction and athlete interviews.
Beginning Monday, July 26, Hoda Kotb, Al Roker and Craig Melvin will join Guthrie to anchor TODAY live from NBC’s outdoor Olympics set overlooking Tokyo’s iconic Rainbow Bridge. Each day, TODAY will feature live exclusive interviews with the world’s biggest athletes, and give viewers behind-the-scenes access to the Olympic events. TODAY will also provide on-the-ground coverage of the unique issues and global storylines surrounding the Games. The show will broadcast at 8 p.m. local time (7 a.m. ET).
Starting Thursday, July 22, Lester Holt will anchor NBC Nightly News from NBC’s Olympic Headquarters at the waterfront overlooking Tokyo Bay and Rainbow Bridge. The newscast will profile members of Team USA, from the most popular stars to lesser known athletes who have overcome incredible obstacles during their Olympics journey. The broadcast will also cover breaking news and all key angles of the Summer Games. Additionally, Holt, who is marking his 10th Olympics, will anchor a special edition of the Webby Award-winning NBC Nightly News: Kids Edition from Tokyo, which just celebrated 100 episodes.
Contributing to the network’s on-the-ground coverage are NBC News correspondents and reporters Tom Llamas, Keir Simmons and Stephanie Gosk who will report on news-of-day stories and culture features throughout the Games.
NBC News Digital will feature key reporting on NBCNews.com/Olympics with Corky Siemaszko from Tokyo. Throughout the Games, a medal-count widget on the NBC News homepage will give users the most up-to-date country wins. Additionally, TODAY ALL DAY will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at TODAY’s Tokyo broadcast Thursday, July 29. Plus, Savannah Sellers will host a one-hour streaming special of Olympics coverage that will air on NBC News NOW Monday, July 26.
NBC previously announced it will present an unprecedented 7,000 hours of Olympic coverage for the Games, making it the biggest media event ever.
