DEAN BAQUET, MARTIN BARON AND MORE TO WEIGH IN ON THE WEAPONIZATION OF DISINFORMATION
Dec. 19, 2019 – Washington, D.C. – Meet the Press with Chuck Todd will air a special edition episode – Alternative Facts: Inside the Weaponization of Disinformation – next Sunday, Dec. 29.
The use of “alternative facts,” a term first heard on Meet the Press in 2017, has become a common occurrence in American politics. From “whataboutism” and gaslighting to unsubstantiated claims of fake news and attacks on the Fourth Estate, Meet the Press will take an in-depth look at the techniques of spreading disinformation, how it’s designed to create chaos and confusion, and its negative effects on the public.
Dean Baquet, executive editor of The New York Times, and Martin Baron, executive editor of The Washington Post, will join the program to discuss the current media landscape and challenges of covering politics and Washington in the era of “alternative facts.”
NBC News National Security Analyst and author of Messing with the Enemy Clint Watts will break down how a conspiracy theory about CrowdStrike and the DNC server made its way from fringe websites to President Donald Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Masha Gessen, staff writer at The New Yorker and author of The Future Is History, and former U.S. Ambassador to Russia and author of From Cold War to Hot Peace Michael McFaul will discuss the Russian playbook of spreading disinformation, how it was deployed in 2016 and how it continues to impact American politics.

MEET THE PRESS WITH CHUCK TODD
Meet the Press with Chuck Todd is where newsmakers come to make news — setting the political agenda and spotlighting the impact Washington decision-making has on Americans across the country. It is the #1 most-watched Sunday public affairs show for the 2018-2019 season, reaching more than three million viewers every Sunday and millions more through social, digital and on-demand platforms. Meet the Press brings its authority and influencer interviews to MSNBC with MTP Daily weekdays at 5 p.m. ET and to The Chuck ToddCast. It’s the longest-running show in television history, recently expanding its brand to include a political short-documentary film festival in collaboration with the American Film Institute. Chuck Todd is the political director of NBC News and the moderator of Meet the Press; John Reiss is the executive producer.
