Broadcast Features Inside Look at NBC News Journalists Who Were Murdered While Exposing Dangers of Cult Leader Jim Jones

‘Jonestown: An American Tragedy’ Airs Friday, July 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. CT

July 10, 2018 – “Dateline NBC” will present a one-hour broadcast on the Jonestown massacre, the largest mass murder-suicide in modern history, this Friday, July 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. CT. The special, entitled “Jonestown: An American Tragedy,” features a comprehensive, in-depth look at the journalists who exposed the dangers of cult leader Reverend Jim Jones, and includes rarely seen footage from their mission to report on Jones’ compound in Guyana. Additionally, NBC News’ Josh Mankiewicz sits down with witnesses to the murders of U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan, NBC News correspondent Don Harris, NBC News cameraman Bob Brown and San Francisco Examiner photographer Greg Robinson, who were all shot and killed by Jones’ followers. This year marks 40 years since the massacre. To view a preview of the special, clickhere.

“Jonestown: An American Tragedy” features interviews with survivors of the shooting, including Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), who accompanied Rep. Ryan during the trip, and former NBC News sound technician Steve Sung, as well as first person accounts from additional reporters on the ground. Mankiewicz also speaks with family members of the journalists who lost their lives. The program is produced by Tim Beacham and senior producer Ellen Mason.
