Investigative Special on Biggest Sex Abuse Scandal in History of Olympic Sports Airs Sunday, April 22 on NBC at 7 p.m. ET
NEW YORK – April 18, 2018 – NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie sits down for an exclusive in-depth interview with former USA Gymnastics National Team Coordinators Bela and Martha Karolyi, speaking for the first time on the biggest sex abuse scandal in the history of Olympic sports. For this special investigative edition of Dateline titled “Silent No More,” airing Sunday, April 22 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, Guthrie visits the couple at Karolyi Ranch in Texas, the site of the National Team Training Center until recently, where many gymnasts were sexually abused by Olympic team doctor Larry Nassar. She also interviews Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney, who describes for the first time the harrowing sexual assault she endured and how she sounded the alarm of Nassar’s abuse years before his arrest.
The one-hour broadcast on Sunday also features an interview with Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman, who says she pushed for Nassar to be investigated and was met with pressure to keep quiet. Additionally, Guthrie speaks with Gina Nichols, mother of gymnast Maggie Nichols and the first parent to learn of the sexual abuse, who recounts how she also pressed USA Gymnastics for an investigation into Nassar over a year before his arrest. “Silent No More” reports on the alleged sexual abuse cover-up, the failures of the FBI and others to stop Nassar sooner and investigates what went wrong in the elite world of Olympic gymnastics. The program is produced by Sarah Fitzpatrick and senior producer Allison Orr.
