FEB. 26, 2017 – Forty-four percent of Americans approve of how President Donald Trump is doing in office – a record low for a newly inaugurated commander-in-chief – according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Forty-eight percent disapprove of Trump’s performance as president, while 32 percent believe his first month in office demonstrates that he is not up to the job.
Compared to Trump’s net negative rating of four percent, Barack Obama began his presidency with a net positive 34 percent; George W. Bush and Bill Clinton enjoyed a similar advantage, and George H.W. Bush’s score of popular goodwill pushed even higher to a net positive of 45 percent.
The president’s personal favorability rating (43 percent positive and 47 percent negative) is stable compared to previous polls, and he holds net positive scores on decisiveness, his ability to “get things done,” and his fitness to deal with the economy.
Americans are split on the president’s executive order on immigration: 44 percent say the policy is necessary, and 45 percent disagree.
Trump’s Supreme Court nomination of Neil Gorsuch is supported by 32 percent and opposed by 20 percent. Forty-seven percent say that they don’t know enough about him to make a judgement.
