CLEVELAND, OH – July 21, 2016 – In talking about Ted Cruz’s speech from the second night of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump Jr. tells Lester Holt “We let him do it, we were the bigger men. He was the guy that came in second.” Holt interviewed both Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump for tonight’s “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.” An excerpted segment of the interview is included below.
Holt will anchor “NBC Nightly News” LIVE from the Republican National Convention in Cleveland tonight. The interview with the Trumps will also air today across NBC News platforms, including MSNBC and NBCNews.com.
In addition to anchoring “NBC Nightly News” live from Cleveland, Holt will lead NBC News’s primetime coverage of the Republican National convention, joined by Guthrie and Chuck Todd from 10-11 p.m. ET. Holt will anchor live inside the convention hall.

LESTER HOLT: There was quite a lot of drama here with the Ted Cruz moment. How did that play? What did you guys talk about?
DONALD TRUMP JR.: Honestly we knew what was coming. We let him do it, we were the bigger men. He was the guy that came in second. We thought it be appropriate to let him speak, to give him the option to speak. There were no conditions attached to that. You didn’t have to come with an endorsement and we didn’t do a “you can speak at two o’clock in the morning on Monday.” We gave him a primetime spot to do what he needed to do. In the end it actually worked out great for us, because what little – if there was any dissention – really galvanized behind us after that moment.”
