NBC Broadcast Delivers Widest Demo Win over ABC in Five Weeks

Nightly Adds Viewers in All Categories Week-to Week and Year-to-Year  

AUGUST 11, 2015 – “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” was #1 across the board for the week of August 3-7, delivering its biggest total viewer audience in four weeks and biggest A25-54 and A18-49 audiences in five weeks.

Week-to-week, Nightly added viewers and widened its lead over ABC in all major categories.  Nightly posted its best total viewer advantage over ABC since the week of 7/6/2015 and best A25-54 and A18-49 advantages since the week of 6/29/2015.

According to Nielsen Media Research Live+Same Day data, the NBC broadcast won all five evenings of the week in total viewers and all demos.  Nightly was also up across-the-board compared to the same week last season and posted the biggest A18-49 and A25-54 gains among the evening newscasts.

Nightly has now won among total viewers for 7 consecutive weeks, 12 of the last 15 weeks, and 300 of the last 307 weeks.

Season-to-date, Nightly is #1 in total viewers, A25-54, and A18-49.

Weekly Highlights:            

  • Nightly averaged 7.848 million total viewers, +355,000 (+5%) ahead of ABC World News Tonight and +1.272 million (+19%) more than CBS Evening News.
  • Nightly averaged 1.964 million A25-54 viewers, leading ABC by +192,000 (+11%) and CBS by +484,000 (+33%).
  • Nightly delivered a 1.6 A25-54 rating, +1 tenth more than ABC and +4 tenths more than CBS.
  • Nightly averaged 1.434 million A18-49 viewers, +220,000 (+18%) higher than ABC and +370,000 (+35%) more than CBS.
  • Nightly delivered a 1.1 A18-49 rating, +1 tenth more than ABC and +3 tenths more than CBS.

Growth:

  • Week-to-week, Nightly was up in total viewers (+21,000), A25-54 viewers (+37,000, or +2%), and A18-49 viewers (+79,000, or +6%).
  • Week-to-week, Nightly’s advantages over ABC were wider in total viewers (by 40%), A25-54 (by 63%), and A18-49 (by 150%).
  • Versus the same week last season, Nightly was up in total viewers (+5%, or +350,000), A25-54 viewers (+16%, or +271,000), and A18-49 viewers.
  • Nightly posted the biggest A18-49 and A25-54 gains among the evening newscasts year-to-year.
  • Versus 3Q’15-to-date levels, Nightly increased its advantages over ABC by 78% in A25-54 (192,000 this week vs. 108,000 QTD) and 100% in A18-49 (220,000 this week vs. 110,000 QTD).

Season-to-Date Highlights:

  • Nightly is averaging 8.693 million total viewers, outperforming ABC by +351,000 (+4%) and CBS by +24% (1.660 million).
  • Nightly is averaging 2.069 million A25-54 viewers this season, leading ABC by +13,000 (+1%) and CBS by +432,000 (+26%).
  • Nightly is averaging 1.484 million A18-49 viewers this season, leading ABC by +90,000 (+6%) and CBS by +369,000 (+33%).
