Week to Week, Nightly Widens Advantages Over ABC Across the Board

FEBRUARY 3, 2015– “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was America’s #1 evening newscast in both total viewers and the key demo A25-54 for the month of January, marking its second straight monthly demo win.  Nightly topped ABC “World News Tonight” by an average of +219,000 viewers A25-54 in January.

The NBC broadcast was #1 across the board for the week of January 26-30, 2015, according to Nielsen Media Research data.  Nightly has been #1 among viewers A25-54 for 4 consecutive weeks, 8 of the last 9 weeks, and 10 of the last 13 weeks.  Nightly has now been the #1 evening newscast in total viewers for 280 consecutive weeks.

Nightly widened its advantages over ABC:

  • Week-to-week: by 27% in total viewers, 81% in A25-54, and 60% in A18-49.
  • Compared to the same week last year: by 107% in A25-54.
  • Compared to the 1Q’15 average: by 84% in A25-54 and 37% in A18-49.

On Monday evening, as much of the country braced for a severe storm, Nightly averaged 11.420 million viewers — the largest evening news delivery of the week and the broadcast’s biggest single-day audience since the day after Thanksgiving (11/28/2014).  Nightly also drew its biggest single-day demo audience (3.138 million) since the Sochi Olympics (2/12/2014).

Season-to-date, Nightly is the #1 evening news program in total viewers and all key demographics and is delivering its best start to a season since 2005.

Weekly Highlights:

  • Nightly averaged 9.889 million total viewers, leading ABC World News Tonight by +404,000 and CBS Evening News by 1.883 million.
  • Nightly averaged 2.537 million A25-54 viewers, topping ABC by +217,000 and CBS by +546,000.
  • Nightly delivered a 2.1 A25-54 rating, +2 tenths more than ABC and +4 tenths more than CBS.
  • Nightly averaged 1.775 million A18-49 viewers, topping ABC by +243,000 and CBS by +508,000.
  • Nightly delivered a 1.9 A18-49 rating, +2 tenths more than ABC and +4 tenths more than CBS.
