CNBC and Change Research Release Results of Latest “States of Play” Poll

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., April 22, 2020 – CNBC and Change Research today announced the results of their latest joint “States of Play” poll, conducted April 17 – April 18th.

CNBC and Change Research polled over 5,700 anticipated general election voters from six major battleground states (Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin), as well as over 1,100 anticipated general election voters nationally, to determine economic sentiment amongst voters. The poll, taken over a month after the federal coronavirus shutdown was initially enacted, shows serious concerns about the virus are beginning to fall. While three-quarters of voters are still seriously concerned by the outbreak and a plurality still say things are getting worse, this is down since the last CNBC/Change Research poll taken at the beginning of April 2020, and results are no longer bipartisan. 

Key findings from the CNBC/Change Research “States of Play” poll conducted April 17-18, 2020 include:

  • Voters in battleground states seem to have passed “peak health concern.” While health is still ranking as the top concern, results have softened since the last CNBC/Change Research poll taken two weeks ago, parallel to a marked increase in concern about the state of the U.S. economy and job market. Meanwhile, the only measurement that voters in battleground states claimed increased optimism in is the state of the stock market, where positive assessments have rebounded from 27% to 34% over the past two weeks.
  • The majority of voters in battleground states are willing to go to great lengths to get back to work and open public spaces, including widespread and regular testing, monitoring, and mask-wearing. Still, the majority draw the line at sharing personal data via their phone in order to conduct contact tracing, and less than half are willing to share personal medical data, like a negative test result, as a condition of entering some public spaces.
  • National unity against the pandemic has become a partisan fight. Voters in battleground states’ responses regarding who they trust for information, who they think is being too aggressive (or not aggressive enough), and even which measures they approve of, all varied based on political leaning. For example, NIH Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, who had a 90% approval rating in the most recent CNBC/Change Research poll taken just two weeks earlier, dropped over 20 points total, with the biggest drop seen among right-leaning respondents.
  • Gearing up for the 2020 general elections, President Trump’s approval and disapproval numbers are nearly split, with 49% of respondents in battleground states stating approval and 51% stating disapproval. Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden is neck and neck with the President, with 48% of respondents in battleground states stating approval and 47% stating disapproval. In almost every category, the two are tied: who would handle the virus better, who would handle the economy better, who would handle the stock market better, and who would handle health care better.

Methodology:

Between April 17-18, 2020, Change Research surveyed 1,178 likely general election voters nationally and 5,787 likely general election voters in the battleground states of Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The margin of error as traditionally calculated among the national sample is ±2.86% and among the battleground sample is ±1.29%. Change Research reaches voters via targeted online ads that point people to an online survey instrument. Its Dynamic Online Sampling establishes and continuously rebalances advertising targets across region, age, gender, race, and partisanship to dynamically deliver large samples that accurately reflect the demographics of a population. In the national survey, post-stratification was done on gender, age, region, education, race, and 2016 presidential vote. In the survey of battleground states, post-stratification was done on state, gender, age, race, education, and 2016 presidential vote.
