ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., April 7, 2020 – CNBC and Change Research today announced the results of their latest CNBC/Change Research “States of Play” poll, conducted April 2 – April 3rd.
CNBC and Change Research polled over 2,000 anticipated general election voters from six major battleground states (Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin), as well as 1,200 anticipated general election voters nationally, to determine economic sentiment amongst voters. The poll, taken as the Coronavirus pandemic consumed the nation, shows Americans are considerably more concerned about their health than they are to potential damage to their wealth, a marked shift from just last month when respondents’ concerns were flipped.
Key findings from the CNBC/Change Research “States of Play” poll conducted April 2-3, 2020 include:
- Voters are increasingly pessimistic about the economy. The overwhelming majority say the U.S. is in a recession now, and just as many are concerned about next year’s economy. Just 35% of respondents in battleground states think the U.S. economy is “good” or “excellent,” compared to 57% in March 2020. More people in battleground states believe they were better off four years ago than they are today. Still, the numbers have not changed on how these people feel about their own personal finances and job security. In battleground states, 50% believe their personal finances are “good” or “excellent” and 66% believe job security is “good” or “excellent.” In the national survey, 52% believe their personal finances are “good” or “excellent” and 64% believe job security is “good” or “excellent.” This is largely unchanged from March 2020.
- 82% of respondents in battleground states say that their main concern is the health of their family, while 18% say they are most concerned about their family’s finances. This is compared to a month ago (March 2020), when respondents were markedly more concerned with their wealth than their health.
- Concerns about COVID-19 have shot up in a month. 63% nationally and 65% in battleground states expressed “very serious concerns” about the virus, compared to 20% in March 2020. A large majority believe the government should take more aggressive steps to combat the virus.
- When respondents in battleground states answered how they view major players in the crisis, doctors, and nurses, in general, received a 96% approval rating, Dr. Anthony Fauci received a 90% approval rating, and Governor Cuomo received a 60% approval rating. President Trump received 51% disapproval rating, drug companies received a 58% disapproval rating, the media received a 61% disapproval rating, and the U.S. Congress received the largest disapproval rating, at 64%.
- When respondents in battleground states answered how they view the government bailout plan, relief for the healthcare industry received almost unanimous support. A majority (54%) opposed loans to big corporations. In fact, 90% of respondents said they approved of the provisions that bar companies from buying back their stock. When asked who the CARE Act will benefit, 41% of respondents believe big corporations and Wall Street. Only 24% believe small business will benefit.

The margin of error as traditionally calculated among the national sample is ±2.5% and among the battleground sample is ±1.981%. Change Research reaches voters via targeted online ads that point people to an online survey instrument. Its Dynamic Online Sampling establishes and continuously rebalances advertising targets across region, age, gender, race, and partisanship to dynamically deliver large samples that accurately reflect the demographics of a population. In the national survey, post-stratification was done on gender, age, region, education, race, and 2016 presidential vote. In the survey of battleground states, post-stratification was done on state, gender, age, race, education, and 2016 presidential vote.
